A POWERFUL TEAM
THAT DEFLATED
WITH A SLOW LEAK ...
Bob Watson
hits for the cycle
September 15,
1979 ... Bob Watson became the first Red Sox player to
hit for the cycle since Carl Yastrzemski did it in 1965.
Jim Rice knocked in four runs
with two hits and Rick Burleson had three hits. And Dick Drago
picked up his 11th save as the Sox whomped the Orioles, 10-2.
The game did have some great
defensive plays also. Al Bumbry made a leaping catch over the wall
off Butch Hobson and Mike O'Berry picked off Bumbry at second base.
Steve Renko, who started for the
Sox, hadn't won a game since the All Star break and hadn't started in
three weeks. He stiffened up in the sixth inning, with the Sox up
2-1, when Dick Drago came in to save him.
Watson singled down the right
field line in the second inning to score Yaz with the first run of
the game. He banged a double inside the third base bag in the fourth,
and led off the eighth inning with a triple to right.
The Sox were ahead 8 to 2 in the
top of the ninth. Ted Sizemore reached on a base hit and moved to
second when Mark Belanger bobbled Fred Lynn's grounder. Jim Rice
scored both runners with a double to left and Yaz brought him home
with a base hit for the Sox' eighth run. Jim Dwyer came in to run for
Yaz and Watson came up to the plate. Don Stanhouse then came in to
replace Tippy Martinez and Watson took one of his pitches long and
deep over the left field fence to complete the cycle and put the Sox
ahead, 10 to 2.
