THE CURSE OF
THE BAMBINO, PART 9
"IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER"...
The
Yankees sweep a doubleheader
from the
ailing Sox
October 4,
1986 ... The Red Sox are wounded and the Yankees swept the
Sox, 5-3 and 3-1, and here are the Red Sox' Blue Cross/Blue Shield major medical
developments:
- Tom Seaver announced he will
not be available for the playoffs because of a sore
right knee. Seaver will be replaced on the 24-man
playoff roster by righthander Steve Crawford.
Seaver has a remote chance of pitching in the World
Series, but it's more likely that he's thrown his
last pitch in the big leagues.
- Rich Gedman took a foul tip on the shoulder in the second
inning of the first game and went to Children's Hospital for X-rays, which were
negative. Gedman did not play the rest of the day and won't play tomorrow, but
he is expected to be back for Game 1 Tuesday.
- Wade Boggs didn't play in either game because of a slight
tear of his right hamstring. He is batting .357 and probably won't play today.
Don Mattingly was 4 for 10 in the doubleheader and is at .351. (If Boggs doesn't
play today, Mattingly must go 6 for 6 to win the title.)
- Roger Clemens threw for 15 minutes before the first game.
It was the first time Clemens had thrown since he was struck on the right elbow
by a line drive off the bat of Baltimore's John Stefero Wednesday. |
