October 26, 1986 ... A few players from both teams straggled into Shea before the game was rained out around 5 p.m. Mets Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter and Ron Darling were already at the stadium. And Red Sox Bill Buckner, Dwight Evans and Don Baylor were in various stages of dressing by the time commissioner Peter Ueberroth beat a hasty retreat into the rainy night after announcing that Game 7 had been postponed until tomorrow.

For the most part, and for various reasons, they didn't want to extend the season an extra day.
