Tom Brunansky & John Valentin
slug out a win for the Red Sox

August 22, 1992 ... There are few nice stories this season, but today the Red Sox not only came back from a 7-3 deficit, they pounded 14 hits in a 10-8 win over the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park before 33,275.

John Valentin's sixth-inning grand slam, his first major league homer, brought them back, and Tom Brunansky's two-run homer in the eighth broke an 8-8 deadlock. Greg Harris and Tony Fossas each pitched an effective third of an inning, and Jeff Reardon got his 26th save, retiring two in the ninth.

Matt Young pitched 3 2/3 innings of near-perfect relief, allowing one unearned run in only his third outing in 22 days and fifth since the All-Star break. There were no signs of rust. In the Fenway sun, Young was actually intimidating as he struck out the side in the seventh.

He came out to pitch the eighth and threw what should have been Out No. 1, but Mo Vaughn couldn't handle Bret Boone's grounder. He successfully fielded a sacrifice and a grounder back to the mound before Henry Cotto slammed a single to right, tying the game at 8. That eliminated any chance Young had for his first win since May 20, 1991, when he beat the Milwaukee Brewers.

Offensively, it was Valentin, No. 13 in your program, who brought the Red Sox back in the sixth by sending an 0-and-1 pitch from Mike Schooler into the net. The rookie shortstop from Seton Hall has been getting his feet wet against major league pitching. He hit nine homers at Pawtucket, and today he finally displayed some of that power.

Another rookie second baseman, Boone, hit his first major league home run in the third, a two-run shot off reliever Mike Gardiner. It was the third generation of Boones who have homered at Fenway Park. In fact, the Boones now have 257 homers.

The Mariners had touched starter Joe Hesketh for single runs in the first two innings: Ken Griffey had an RBI single and Jay Buhner hit his 20th homer. In the third, Hesketh got into trouble and Gardiner relieved with no outs and the bases full. After Buhner hit into a 1-2-3 double play, Tino Martinez singled in two runs, setting the stage for Boone's homer. The Mariners scored their seventh run on another Griffey RBI single in the fourth.

Brunansky's sacrifice fly in the first inning scored the first Sox run. Boston struck for two in the second on Billy Hatcher's bases-loaded double.

After Valentin's homer made it 7-7, the Sox took an 8-7 lead in the seventh as Herm Winningham's single scored Vaughn. Tied, 8-8, in the eighth, Bob Zupcic singled to right field with one out, setting the stage for Brunansky's 13th homer on a 1-and-0 pitch by Russ Swan.

It was an effective day for the Sox bullpen after Gardiner, who allowed five hits and three runs. Young threw 49 pitches to keep the Sox in the game, Harris threw three pitches to get the win, Fossas threw four pitches to get the hold and Reardon nine pitches for the save.
