"THE FUTURE AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE"
The
Sox complete their Fenway Park season
with their 3rd shutout sweep of the Orioles
September 27,
2015 ... The
Red Sox completed a sweep of the Orioles, blanking Baltimore for a
third consecutive day in a 2-0 victory. Boston outscored the O's,
17-0, during the three-game set to close out the regular season at
home.
Rookie
left-hander Henry Owens was lights-out for the Sox, tossing 7 2/3 innings with
three hits and one walk, while striking out five. Red Sox pitchers have thrown
29 consecutive innings of scoreless ball. All three of the hits Owens allowed
were singles.
The Sox took
a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 2-0 win at Fenway Park
capping a run in which they held the Orioles scoreless for all 27 innings.
It wasn’t
that long ago when it seemed impossible for the Sox to squeeze even the
slightest bit of fun out of this season. They’d been in last place in the AL
East all but two days since June 9, with today’s win moving them a half-game
ahead of Tampa Bay and just a game behind the third-place Orioles.
Their fate
was staring them in the face Sunday going into the finale against the Orioles —
the combination of a Sox loss and a Houston Astros win would have officially
eliminated them from the playoff race — but they managed to put the math off for
another day.
The
three-game sweep was their third of the season and the first against the Orioles
since 2011. The Red Sox closed out their Fenway Park schedule with a 43-38
record, winning 19 of their final 30 home games. They’re now just five games
under .500 after being as much as 14 under as recently as Aug. 17. The hole they
dug for themselves was too deep to climb out of, but Torey Lovullo was proud of
the turnaround since..
Boston took
the lead in the first when Brock Holt darted home on a wild pitch that bounced
away from Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph. Swihart added a solo homer in the third
inning off Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who struck out six over seven solid
innings.
Noe Ramirez,
Tommy Layne, and Robbie Ross Jr. preserved the shutout. The Sox hadn’t strung
together three straight shutouts since 2004, when they blanked the Yankees once
and the Rays twice. They hadn’t swept a series with three shutouts since 1958
against the Washington Senators |
