CONSISTENT AT BEING INCONSISTENT ...
Chris Sale sets a Sox record by striking out
17 batters in seven innings

May 14, 2019 ... Chris Sale set a personal career high with 17 strikeouts in his most dominant start of the season. He was nothing short of brilliant by striking out the first six Colorado Rockies batters and eight of the first nine. He tied Pedro Martinez for second most strikeouts in a Red Sox uniform, just three behind Roger Clemens.

His 17 Ks through seven innings, were three short of tying the major league record of 20 Ks in a game. But with concerns over his recent arm issues, Alex Cora yanked him after 108 pitches.

The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Michael Chavis' 451 foot blast over the Green Monster. J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each then hit solo homers to give Sale a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

But the Rockies scored in the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Nolan Arenado and took a 4-3 lead on Charlie Blackmon's two-run shot in the eight inning off Brandon Workman, who relieved Sale.

Mitch Moreland tied the game in the eight with a run-scoring triple, but lost in the 11th inning when Mark Reynolds singled in the winning run off Ryan Brasier.

The Sox pitching staff had struck out 24 Rockies batters without a walk until Brasier walked two batters in the 11th to set up the go-ahead run.
