John Collins' drive in the 11th inning wins for the Sox

JOHN "SHANO" COLLINS

ON THIS DATE (May 30, 1922) ... Washington and the Red Sox split a doubleheader, with the home team being shutout in the first game 2 to 0, but winning the second game 9 to 8 in 11 innings. The curtain raiser was a battle between Jack Quinn and Eric Erickson with all the scoring being done in the first inning. But the second game was a wild affair and alternated in the lead, with both teams running out about 30 players.

John Collins contributed the fielding feature of the day by jumping and making a one-handed catch of a ball hit against the right-field bleacher fence. If it was not caught, the ball it would've gone for a home run. It was also he who drove in the winning run in the 11th inning of the second game.

Roger Peckinpaugh made a great play in the ninth inning to prevent the Red Sox from winning then. Joe Dugan had led off with a double and Collins hit a hot grounder between Earl Smith at third and Peckinpaugh the shortstop. It looked as if the game would be all over, but Peckinpaugh shot across, nipped the ball with one hand close to the foul line and threw to Smith in time to get Dugan sliding into third.

Washington was first to score in the nightcap, getting a run in the first inning after two were out, on a walk to Sam Rice and a triple to center by Joe judge. The Red Sox tied it up in their half of the second inning when Elmer Smith opened with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Harris.

Singles by Judge and Goose Goslin, around a misplay by Harris while Goslin was in a rundown between first and second, gave Washington another run in the fourth inning and put them in the lead, 2 to 1. But the Red Sox came back in their half of the inning on singles by Smith, Harris and Frankie O'Rourke to fill the bases, before Muddy Ruel was hit by a pitch to force a run across. The Nationals starting pitcher Joe Gleason was replaced by Tom Phillips after that. Bill Piercy was struck out, but Nemo Leibold singled to center, to score Harris and O'Rourke. Ruel followed them over the plate when Rice's throw trying, to get him, went wide. The Red Sox increased their lead in the fourth inning on a double by Harris and another one by Ruel, putting them up 6 to 2.

But in the fifth inning, Piercy got wild and passed Judge, the first man up. Frank Brower followed with a single to center and Judge moved over to third when Leibold juggled the ball. Piercy passed Goslin filling the bases and Clyde Milan came up to pinch-hit. He hit a ground ball to O'Rourke, who fumbled it and allowed Judge to score. Then Peckinpaugh brought Brower home with a sacrifice fly to left. Patsy Gharrity was now sent up to bat in place of Phillips and slammed the ball against the scoreboard in left for a double. That scored Goslin and Milan, and he scored on a single by Stanley Harris, putting Washington up 7 to 6. Bennie Karr was next brought in to pitch and got out of the jam.

In the eighth-inning the Red Sox tied up the score. Ruel drew a free pass and Rip Collins was sent in to bat for Karr. With two strikes on him, Eddie Foster came up to finish the at-bat and struck out, but on the third strike, Ruel stole second base. Burns drove a double to left and scored him, making it 7 to 7.

The game went into the 11th inning when Washington scored the go-ahead run. Peckinpaugh drew a pass and Gharrity struck out. Earl Smith beat out an infield hit and then he and Peckinpaugh pulled a double steal. Harris was intentionally passed to fill the bases and Rice hit a grounder to Burns, who was able to get Peck at the plate. Judge worked a pass off Curt Fullerton, which forced Earl Smith over with the go-ahead run. The bases were still full when Brower hit an easy ground ball to Burns for the final out.

Now down a run, the Red Sox came up in the bottom of the inning and Burns led off with a double. Del Pratt brought him home with a base hit and took second on the throw. Pinkie Pittenger popped up the Smith but John Collins followed with a line drive that bounced off the scoreboard, putting Pratt over with the walk-off winning run, 9 to 8.
