ON THIS DATE (June 6, 1966)
... The Sox beat the Atlanta Braves, 5 to 3, in their
exhibition game that benefited the Jimmy Fund. It was their fifth
meeting to raise funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Research Hospital
in Boston.
The Braves went ahead in the second inning when Joe Torre led off
with a triple. He scored on Rico Carty's sacrifice fly to Tony
Conigliaro. After a single by Felix Milan, Dan Schneider bunted a
ball in front of the plate and catcher Mike Ryan threw it past George
Scott. By the time Tony C. retrieved it, Milan came all the way
around to score.
The Sox scored two runs to tie up the game in their half of the
inning. Conigliaro bunted for a base hit and George Smith moved him
over to third with a double to right. Ryan brought them both in with
a single to center.
Carl Yastrzemski's homer in the fifth inning put the Sox ahead, 3 to
2. But after Carty doubled off Dalton Jones' glove in the sixth and
Scott let Brandon's throw go by him on a grounder to the pitcher, the
Braves tied the game.
The Sox went ahead for good when Joe Foy tripled in the Sox half of
the sixth inning and scored on Lenny Green's sacrifice fly. George
Smith followed with another double off the wall and he was brought
home by Joe Christopher's base hit to center, for the Sox fifth run.
The Red Sox committed five errors and the Braves couldn't capitalize
on all the miscues.
Dave Morehead threw five pretty good innings. He wasn't blazing fast
but he had an effective curve ball. Darrell Brandon pitched the final
four innings. |
