George Burns slugs a game winning |
ON THIS DATE (July 7th, 1922) ... George Burns turned on one of Hub Pruett's pitches and sent the ball sailing over the left-field fence, bringing down the curtain on the doubleheader between the Red Sox and the St. Louis Browns. The first-place Browns had won the opening game, 1-0, in a pitcher's duel between Urban Shocker and Herb Pennock. The score in the second game, which Burns had brought to an abrupt halt, was 5 to 4. Both were great games to watch from start to finish. George Sisler was very much in evidence throughout the afternoon. In the first game he connected for a single and a double in three times at bat and in the afternoon game had four hits, including a double and triple in six times up. Joe Harris was sent in two times for the Red Sox, as a pinch-hitter, and delivered on both occasions. He hit a single in the first game and a double in the second, which had much to do with the Red Sox win in extra innings. Alex Ferguson, who started the second game for the Red Sox against Rasty Wright, had one bad inning in which the Browns piled up three runs but after that, pitched well until he gave way to a pinch-hitter in the ninth. Allen Russell took over and did some fine work, especially in the 12th inning, when he stopped Sisler with two men on base. The Red Sox got in the lead to start the second game. Nemo Leibold led off with a base hit but was forced at second by Mike Menosky. Menosky then stole second and scored on a single by Del Pratt. The Browns countered with three runs in the third inning. Wright led off with a base hit and Jim Tobin followed with another, putting him on third. He scored when Wally Gerber hit a line drive off the shin of Sox shortstop, Chick Maynard. A base hit to left by Sisler brought home Tobin. Gerber moved over to third and Sisler went to second on the throw to the plate. Marty McManus bounced a ball back to Ferguson, who threw out Gerber at the plate, while Sisler moved over to third-base. Then, in attempting to catch McManus napping at first, Ferguson threw the ball away and Sisler scored the third run of the inning. Down 3 to 1 in the sixth inning with two outs, Joe Dugan lined a double to left, stole second and scored on a single by John Collins. In the seventh inning, Joe Harris batted for Maynard and led off with a double. Pinky Pittenger was put in to run and came in with the tying run, on a sacrifice fly by Leibold. The tie didn't last long because in the visitors half of the eighth, Sisler lined a triple to right-center, which nearly carried into the bleachers. He scored the go-ahead run on a single by McManus. Then in the ninth-inning the Sox evened up the game. Collins beat out an infield hit and went to second on Muddy Ruel's sacrifice. He scored on a single to right by Smith, who came in to bat for Maynard. On the throw home Smith went to second. Then Bennie Karr was sent up to bat in place of the pitcher Ferguson, and in came Pruett, a left-handed pitcher, to face him. So manager Hugh Duffy pulled out Karr and put in Eddie Foster. Foster grounded out, but moved Smith over to third. Unfortunately he died there when Chick Shorten made a fine catch on Leibold's line drive, for the third out. With Allen Russell on the mound, the Browns could not do anything, nor could the Red Sox against Pruett until the 13th inning. Then Pruett gave Burns a fat pitch and the ball when flying over the left-field fence to end the game, giving the Red Sox a 5 to 4 win, and a split of the doubleheader. |
