TEX HUGHSON |
ON THIS DATE (August 15, 1942)
... The Boston Red Sox hung two
defeats on the Washington Nationals at Fenway. Ted Williams' 25th
home run and Tex Hughson's pitching in the clinches, gave the Red Sox
a 2 to 1 victory in the opener. Then the Sox came from behind in the
ninth inning of the nightcap to win, 7 to 6.
Ted's third inning home run with a man on, was enough for Hughson to
hang up his ninth consecutive victory and 15th of the season. Tex was
touched for three successive hits and a run in the National's fifth.
George Case tried to score from first on the third hit, Stan Spence's
double. However, Dom DiMaggio threw him out at the plate.
Hughson, although he yielded ten hits, was tough when runners were on
base, while his Sox teammates handed Sid Hudson his first defeat in
five starts.
Case's steal of home, his 29trh stolen base of the season, gave
Washington a one run lead in the second game, but Bobby Doerr's 13th
homer of the year, with Ted on base, put the Sox back in front in
their half of the same inning.
The Sox extended their lead, after which the Nats pecked away at Sox
pitchers, Joe Dobson, Oscar Judd and Charlie Wagner, taking a one run
lead in the ninth inning. The Red Sox won with one out in the last
half of the final frame. Ted singled and Doerr sacrificed him to
second. They both scored on Lou Finney's triple over right-fielder,
Bruce Campbell's head. |
