Augie Lio was born in East Boston on April 30, 1918, played for Passaic High School in New Jersey. He went on to play as a lineman for Georgetown University, where he made first team All American in 1940.

He was taken in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions in the 1941 NFL Draft and played as a two-way lineman and kicker for the Lions from 1941 thru 1943. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1941 and 1942. In 1943 he led the NFL with 11 field goal attempts, but made only two. He was 21 of 23 in extra points.

In 1944 and 1945 he played guard for the Boston Yanks and kicked 6 field goals and 25 extra points.

In 1946 he went to the Philadelphia Eagles and finished his pro career with the 1947 Baltimore Colts in the All American Football Conference. He spent 1948 and 1949 coaching and kicking for the Paterson Panthers in the American Football League and won the league title in 1948.

After his retirement from professional football he spent the next 37 years at the Herald & News in Passaic, NJ as sports editor, columnist and writer, covering the New York Giants and boxing. In the 1970s he became the president of the New Jersey Boxing Writers Association and was elected to the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1982.

Augie Lio was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979 and passed away on September 3, 1989, at age 71, in Clifton, NJ.
