BOB YATES   T

Bob Yates was born November 20, 1938, in East Montpelier, Vermont. A graduate of Montpelier High School he  led his team to the state title in 1956. He was named as a High School All American in 1955 and anchored the line of the 1956 Vermont Shrine team.

He went on to become a standout lineman, punter and kicker at Syracuse University from 1958 to 1960 and played on the undefeated 1959 Orange Bowl national championship team. He was named as` a first team All American and in 1960, his Syracuse team played in the Cotton Bowl, while he went on to play in the Senior Bowl. Upon graduation, he received the school's "Pat Millar Award" given to the college's Outstanding Student Athlete.

He was drafted by the New York Giants in the 7th round of the 1960 NFL Draft but went on to play with the Boston Patriots in the newly formed American Football League. He spent six seasons playing tackle with the Patriots.

After his playing days, Bob coached and taught for 34 years. He coached at Lawrence High School, Harvard and then was the head coach at Gloucester High School. He returned to Vermont in 1979 and taught and coached at Burlington High School for nine years.

He was honored as one of the "44" Players of the Century at Syracuse in 1999 and was inducted into the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Bob Yates passed away on April 16, 2013, at age 74, in Spring Branch, Texas.
