In the November 1943 minor-league draft, the Boston Red Sox picked Clem
Hausmann. Pitching coach Frank Shellenback worked with him in spring training,
trying to help him develop a change of pace and to better disguise his pitchers.
He was said to throw “with a wrist snap similar to style Smokey Joe Wood
employed when pitching for the Sox more than three decades ago. And while his
fastball is not impressive to watch it is apparently of the sneaky type which
fools hitters.” ...
