GARRETT CROCHET

Garrett Crochet was born and raised in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where he attended Ocean Springs High School. As a junior, he posted a 3–0 record with a 0.51 earned run average (ERA) and 25 strikeouts in 27 2⁄3 innings pitched. Originally committed to Jones County Junior College, Crochet’s breakout senior season was highlighted by a 6–4 record, a 1.48 ERA, and 76 strikeouts. He drew attention from several major college programs. He ultimately committed to the University of Tennessee.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 34th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, but he chose to attend Tennessee instead.

There, he developed into one of the nation’s top pitching prospects. As a freshman in 2018, he posted a 5–6 record with a 5.51 ERA and 62 strikeouts. He improved in 2019, going 5–3 with a 4.02 ERA before missing the SEC Tournament due to a broken jaw. That summer, he was invited to the United States Collegiate National Baseball Team training camp and was named a preseason First-Team All-American before his junior year.

Garrett missed the first three weeks of the 2020 season with arm soreness and appeared in only one game before the college baseball season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chicago White Sox selected Garrett with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, signing him for a $4.55 million bonus. On September 18, 2020, he became the first player from the 2020 draft class to reach the major leagues and the first to debut in his draft year since 2014. He also became the 22nd player in MLB history to reach the majors without playing a minor league game.

He appeared in five games during the shortened 2020 season, throwing six scoreless innings while consistently reaching 100 mph with his fastball. He also pitched in the 2020 American League Wild Card Series, striking out both batters he faced before leaving with forearm tightness.

In 2021, he posted a 2.82 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 54 1⁄3 innings out of the bullpen, but missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Returning in 2023, he pitched in 13 games, recording a 3.55 ERA in 12 2⁄3 innings. The White Sox named him their Opening Day starting pitcher for the 2024 season, despite his lack of prior MLB starts. He excelled in his new role, earning AL "Pitcher of the Month" honors for June and finishing the first half with a league-leading 150 strikeouts. He completed the 2024 season with a 3.58 ERA and 209 strikeouts in 146 innings, earning the American League "Comeback Player of the Year" Award.

On December 11, 2024, the White Sox traded Crochet to the Red Sox in exchange for prospects Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wikelman González. He was named the Red Sox Opening Day starter for the 2025 season and signed a six-year, $170 million contract extension on March 31st.

He quickly established himself as yhe Sox ace. On June 1st, he recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts against the Atlanta Braves, and on July 12th, he threw his first career complete game shutout in a 1–0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He achieved his 500th career strikeout on August 23rd against the New York Yankees and became the first pitcher in 2025 to reach 250 strikeouts, doing so on September 25th.

Garrett finished the 2025 season with an 18–5 record, a 2.59 ERA, and 255 strikeouts in 205 1⁄3 innings pitched, all career highs. He was selected to his second consecutive All-Star Game and emerged as one of the premier left-handed pitchers in baseball.
