Herman "Winks" Gundlach was born in Houghton, Michigan on July 16, 1913 and attended Houghton High School and then Worcester Academy for a year in 1931. He played college football at Harvard and was team captain in 1934.

"Winks" even had the opportunity to play against the Chicago Bears as part of an All-Star team before heading off to a brief pro career playing guard for the Boston Redskins in 1935.

After World War II, from 1946 until he retired in 1988, his Gundlach Construction company built many of the major structures in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Besides being a successful businessman, he was a prominent activist.

Herman "Winks" Gundlach was a member of the Harvard Varsity Club and passed away after a stroke on May 5, 2005, at age 91, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
