Jack Riley was born in Chicago on July 13, 1909. He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois and then St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin. While there, he was captain of the rowing team that won their championship in 1927. Jack played football for Northwestern University and helped win two Big Ten Conference titles. He was named an All-American in 1931. He also wrestled and was the national collegiate champion in 1931 and 1932 and went on to win a silver medal in the 1932 Summer Olympics. After college he played as a lineman for the Boston Redskins in 1933. After his pro football career, he became a professional wrestler for two years and became the wrestling coach at Northwestern from 1948 to 1957. During World War II he was a major in the Marine Corp and after the war he was as a manufacturers' rep in Kenilworth, Illinois Jack Riley was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and passed away in Kenilworth, Illinois on March 22, 1993 at age 83. |
