Jeremy Giambi was born in San Jose, California. Like his oloder brother, Jason, he attended South Hills High School. He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the sixth round of the 1996 Draft out of Cal State Fullerton, where he was a member of the 1995 College World Series championship team. He was called up by the Royals in 1998 but was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2000, getting to play with his brother for two seasons. He was the player who was tagged put at home durind the ALDS against the Yankees by DErek Jeter's "flip play". In 2002 he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and finished the season hitting 20 homers. The 2003 campaign was his last in the Majors. It came with the Red Sox after he was traded the previous December for Josh Hancock. He eventually lost his DH job to David Ortiz. He struggled that season, batting .197 in 156 plate appearances. After being released by the Red Sox he signed minor league deals with the Dodgers in 2004 and the White Sox in 2005. In March, 2005 he admitted to using steroids in a grand jury testimony and was named in the 2007 Mitchell Report. He was later portrayed in the film "Moneyball". Jeremy Giambi passed after committing suicide by gunshot wound on February 9th. He was 47 years old. |
