“FENWAY'S BEST PLAYERS”

BOSTON RED SOX
1988-2021
JERRY REMY

Due to an injury that precipitated an unplanned early retirement during spring training in 1986, in 1988 Jerry Remy signed on as a sports analyst for NESN (New England Sports Network) which carries the Red Sox games. Initially he was part of a three man team which consisted of himself, Don Orsillo, and Ned Martin. Eventually Martin fell by the wayside and the dynamic between Jerry and Orsillo was so good management knew better than to mess with a winning team. What that pairing has produced so far is 4 Emmy Awards, and a 2004 nod from Sports Illustrated as the favorite sports announcer in Massachusetts.

In 2008, Jerry had surgery to remove a "very small, low-grade cancerous area" from his lung, most likely a result of years of smoking cigarettes. During his recovery from the surgery, he suffered from an infection as well as a bout of pneumonia. Due to fatigue and depression, he took a leave of absence from his broadcast duties for NESN, in 2009.  He returned full time for the 2010 baseball season. He then took time off in 2013 due to a bout of pneumonia.

On August 16, 2013, Jerry announced that he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence after his son was arrested for murder. Remy did not return to the broadcast booth until the beginning of the 2014 season.

Jerry suffered relapses with his bout with lung cancer numerous times over the years. In June, 2021 he was hospitalized for five days, due to his shortness of breath. He stepped away from the broadcast booth for the final time on August 4th to to continue his treatment.

Jerry's last public appearance was at Fenway Park on October 5, 2021 when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch to broadcast partner Dennis Eckersley, before the Red Sox - Yankees Wild Card Game.

Just as he excelled on the field, he has excelled in the booth, culminating in four Emmy Awards. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.

Over the course of 40 years, the Boston baseball market was turned into the cult of the Rem-Dawg. He died on October 30, 2021.

He is a well-loved figure in Red Sox Nation, bringing his humble yet affable personality to every televised game. As such, Remy was "elected" to be the first "President" of Red Sox Nation. During slower parts of the game, the pair will carry on long non-baseball discussions, with pop culture a frequent topic. The pair also often discuss the imaginary exploits of Wally the Green Monster, a doll of which sits with the pair at the front of the broadcast booth. - See more at: http://www.allamericanspeakers.com/sportspeakers/printbio.php?speaker_id=Jerry-Remy#sthash.gNPmto9u.dpuf
