Joe Avezzano was born on November 17, 1943 in Yonkers, NY, and attended Andrew Jackson High School in Miami. He then went on to play football at Florida State University. He played one season as a center for the Boston Patriots in 1966. In 1967 he moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was released before the regular season. Following his pro football career, he started his coaching career at Washington High School in Massilon, Ohio in 1967. He moved up to the college ranks as an assistant college coach at Florida State, Iowa State, the University of Pittsburgh, and then the University of Tennessee. He was named the head coach at Oregon State University from 1980 thru 1984 and was released after a five year losing record. From 1985-1989 he then worked as the offensive line coach and coordinator at Texas A&M. He next was hired as the special teams coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1990 thru 2002 under Jimmy Johnson, where he received the NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year award in 1991, 1993 and 1998 and in 2002 he moonlighted coaching the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League. In 2003 he moved over to the Oakland Raiders with Norv Turner,as special teams coach from 2003 thru 2005. He became the owner of "Coach Joe's Bar and Grill" in Frisco, Texas and "Hat Tricks" in Lewisville, Texas. He also bought the Corpus Christi Sharks if the Arena Football League in 2006. In 2011, Joe moved to Italy to coach the Milan Seamen in the Italian Football League. On April 5, 2012, Joe Avezzano died of a heart attack, at age 68, in Milan, Italy. |
