JOHN MARZANO   C

John Marzano was born on February 14, 1963 in Philadelphia. He graduated from its  Central High School, and briefly attended  Holy Family College, and then attended Temple University, where he played catcher for the Owls' baseball team from 1982 to 1984. In 1982, he played  collegiate summer baseball with the  Wareham Gatemen of the  Cape Cod Baseball League

He finished his collegiate career with a .413 batting average and was named an All-American by three different organizations. In 1984, he batted .448, with 15 home runs, and 61 RBI. He finished his career as the all-time Temple University leader in batting average, slugging percentage, and home runs.

In the  1984 Major League Baseball draft, he was selected in the first round, 14th overall, by the Boston Red Sox and was a member of the silver medal-winning Team USA at the  1984 Olympic Games.

John joined the Red Sox in 1987 and played for six seasons with the Red Sox before his release during spring training of 1993. After spending the next season and a half in the minors, he resurfaced with the Texas Rangers for a two game stint during the 1995 season. Granted Free Agency after the season, he signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners. It was in Seattle that he played his final three seasons in the majors, as the backup to starting catcher Dan Wilson.  He had a career batting average of .241, with 11 home runs and 72 runs batted in.

After his playing days, he had done postgame analysis of Phillies games on WIP Radio and Comcast SportsNet. He also ran a baseball academy.

John Marzano died unexpectedly after a fall down the steps at his home, on April 19, 2008 in South Philadelphia.  He was only 45 years old.
