Tom Stephens was born August 29, 1935, in Galveston, Texas. A graduate of Washington High School in New York, he became a standout halfback at Syracuse University from 1957 to 1959. He was a member of the 1958 team that played in the Orange Bowl.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 11th round of the 1959 NFL Draft but went on to play with the Boston Patriots in the newly formed American Football League in 1960. He spent five seasons with the Patriots and caught 41 passes for 506 yards and scored five touchdowns as a tight end, defensive back and punt and kickoff returner.

After his playing days, he coached football at Harvard, followed by being the Athletic Director at Curry College for 23 years. In 1995 he was inducted into the Curry College Hall of Fame.

Tom Stephens passed away at his home on July 20, 2018, at age 82, in Naples, Florida.
