The Boston Red Sox had seen Tony Welzer pitch in spring training. In a game at Mobile on April 1, 1925, he had held them scoreless for four or five innings, leaving the game after his teammates had scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. On September 14, 1925, the Red Sox purchased the contracts of three players, one of whom was Tony from Mobile.
