THE 1915 BOSTON BRAVES
The Braves win a scrapper in the 11th inning
May 8, 1915
... About 10,000 fans were Fenway Park today to see
the Braves polish off the New York Giants by a score of 4 to 3 in 11
innings. The Giants took kindly to the pitching of Tom Hughes and
hammered the ball giving the Boston infield a chance to do some good
fielding, as they got no fewer than five doubleplays. Rube Marquard
pitched seven innings for the Giants, holding the Braves to two hits,
and he may have had a shutout all but for a silly play by Larry Doyle
at second in the fifth inning and a wild throw by shortstop art
Fletcher in the sixth inning. The Giants
first run off Hughes was scored on a double and a single in the second inning.
The Giants went to bat in the ninth-inning with the score 2 to 1 against them
and Doyle tied the score on an error by Butch Schmidt and a nice single by Dave
Robertson.
In the 10th inning, with one down, Rube Schauer,
who was on the mound for the Giants, got a base hit and was immediately doubled
up on Red Murray's ground ball to Rabbit Maranville. The Braves made a fine
effort to try and clinch the game in their half of the 10th as Sherry Magee drew
a base on balls, but was forced at second by Schmidt. Then Red Smith singled to
left and Maranville hit a slow one down to Hans Lobert at third, who shot it to
home in time to get Schmidt at the plate. Maranville drew the throw down to
second base on the play, and Smith then tried to score, but he was nipped at the
plate on a sharp return throw by Fletcher.
In the 11th inning, Fletcher smashed a double
against the left-field bank and scored on a base hit by George Burns to put the
Giants up 3 to 2. Schauer had been pitching a good game and things look
favorable at this point for New York. But then reliable Hank Gowdy got a pitch
to his liking and sent it against the left-field wall for two bases. Stallings
brought in Paul Strand as a pinch runner for him and put Larry Gilbert at the
plate to bat for Hughes. Gilbert laid down a good bunt that Chief Meyers should
have allowed to roll foul, but instead he picked it up and threw late to first
base. Now with runners on first and third, Herbie Moran dropped a bloop hit into
short left field that scored Gowdy with the tying run. Dick Egan grounded out
and Gilbert made it to third base on the play. At this point, Schauer made a
mistake and threw the ball into the dirt in front of home plate, only to see it
bounce over his catcher shoulder allowing Gilbert to score the winning run and
give the Braves a thrilling 4-3 win. |
