Warren Spahn shuts out the
Phillies
April 28, 1948 ... Warren
Spahn had some hop on his fastball and he had great control, in
registering his first victory of the season and the Braves third
straight, by shutting out the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 0 at Braves
Field. After the game Spahn said that he regarded this two hitter
against the Phillies as one of his all time great efforts. The reason
he felt was that he simply had great control and did not even walk
one batter. Spahn faced only 28 batters and just three men reached
first base. The first one was Del Ennis, who reached on an error. The second one
was Dick Sisler, who led off the sixth with a single to right and Blix Donnelly,
who singled to left with two outs in the sixth. But first base was as far as any
Philly batter was able to make it, as Spahn had great control and iron curtain
defense behind him.
Last week in Philadelphia, the Phillies took a lot of liberties with Bill
Salkeld's throwing arm. They ran as often as they could after getting on base
and they tried to do that again in this game. But Salkeld was ready and he
rubbed out two baserunners trying to steal second, which is why Spahn only faced
28 batters.
Salkeld not only did some good throwing but his bat rang out loud and often.
He had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two more. On top of that, he
stole second in the third inning to set up the Braves first run. He opened the
third with a single and stole second. Al Dark reached first on an error by
Granny Hamner and a sacrifice bunt by Spahn advanced the runners. Eddie
Stanky's fly ball to left brought home Salkeld with the Braves first run.
The Tribe's second run was scored by Spahn, who beat out a bunt to open the
fifth. He took third on Stanky's hit-and-run single behind first, while the
Phillies were in close looking for a bunt. Then Jim Russell hit into a fast
doubleplay and Spahn was able to score.
In the sixth inning, Salkeld broke the game wide open. After Jeff Heath
walked and Tommy Holmes singled, Bill tripled to left-center. He scored as Dark
beat out a hit to short and the inning's fourth run came across after Spahn
sacrificed and Stanky hit the ball to left for a double. Earl Torgeson's single
brought home Stanky with the Braves seventh and final run of the game.
The last three victories pitch by Spahn have been shutouts. His 20th win was
a shutout over the Dodgers last year and his 21st with a shutout over the
Giants. He led the league in shutouts last year with seven. He threw only a
dozen curves all afternoon, because he was so sure of his fastball. Outside of
the two singles, only four balls were hit out of the infield. Jeff Heath caught
two, as Holmes and Russell caught one apiece. |
