Larry Jansen handcuffs the Tribe's
hitters in New York

Jansen baffled the Braves hitters, limiting them to five hits at the
Polo Grounds, as the Giants salvaged the final of the three-game
series by a score 5 to 1. Since coming to the National League a year
ago, the giant right-hander, who the Red Sox allowed to get away, as
been like arsenic to the Braves. Today's win was his seventh overall
over the Tribe, who have yet to beat him. The Giants ace was more
than evenly matched for five innings by Red Barrett, the Braves starter. A
one-to-one deadlock was dissolved in the sixth inning by the Giants. Sid Gordon
started off with a single and scored ahead of Johnny Mize, when the giant
firstbaseman lined a drive toward right-field, that struck the lead to the wall
in front of the lower tier and bounced in among the customers for Mize's third
homer of the year. If the barrier had not been there it may have traveled right
across the river to Yankee Stadium. The monstrous belt by Mize was followed by a
triple off the bat of Willard Marshall. Then Walker Cooper lofted one toward the
visiting bullpen which Jeff Heath managed to get his glove on, but couldn't hold
on, as it fell in for a double.
By now the Giants had hit Barrett for the cycle and Billy Southworth brought
in Vern Bickford. Jack Lohrke came up and dropped in a base hit between Tommy
Holmes and Eddie Stanky that brought in Walker Cooper from third, making the
score 5 to 1.
The lone Braves run that Jansen permitted was recorded on a high fly ball off
the bat of Jeff Heath that fell into the lower part of the double deck right
field grandstand. It was not a prodigious wallop, however was good for his
second homer the year. That run was equalized on errors by Alvin Dark and Earl
Torgeson, sandwiched around a single from bill Rigney for a run.
Jim Prendergast pitched the last two innings for the Braves and look great,
fanning Mize and only giving up a Texas Leaguer by Buddy Kerr. The Braves took
the midnight train for Pittsburgh and it will work out tomorrow at Forbes Field. |
