Bill Voiselle
wins his 10th straight

a four hit masterpiece today, Bill Voiselle became the first National
League pitcher to chalk up four victories, as he pinned a 2-0 setback
on the Chicago Cubs before 3781 dampened, chilled customers at
Wrigley Field. Voiselle also has pitched his 10th win in a row over
the past two years. He won his last six games in 1947.
His performance today surpassed his three previous wins. He was in one jam
with the Cubs, loading the bases with two out in the first inning as he rubbed
out Harry Lowrey on a soft roller down to Alvin Dark. A walk to Eddie Waitkus
and Hal Jeffcoat's single gave the Cubs runners on first and third. Voiselle
didn't take any chances with Bill Nicholson, who he has had trouble with in the
past, so he walked him to fill the bases. Then Lowrey grounded out to end the
threat.
After the first inning, Voiselle was in command. He didn't walk any other
batter and fanned seven men, ending the game by knocking out Nicholson and
Lowrey in succession. In five starts this year Voiselle has allowed only eight
runs. His earned run average is 1.77
Bob Elliott knocked in both runs for the Braves. His single brought home
Alvin Dark in the third inning and his infield tap sent Jim Russell flying home
for the insurance run in the eighth-inning. The Braves have now won six out of
the last nine on this rainy road trip and are moving up in the National League
standings. The Braves took the 430 train out of here for New York to play the
Dodgers at Ebbets field. |
