May 14, 1948 ... Ralph Branca was pitching for the Dodgers when a rain storm, which had been threatening all afternoon and evening, finally broke loose and washed out the opener of a three game series between the Braves and the Dodgers.

The first batter to face Branca was Tommy Holmes, who lashed out a single into center field for what should have given the N.L. batting leader a record of having hit safely in 13 straight games.  Eventually the Braves filled the bases, as Al Dark singled off Preston Ward's glove.  A perfect sacrifice by Jim Russell pushed the runners up.  Bob Elliott drew a walk and Jeff Heath came up as a drizzle began to fall.  After Heath fouled off multiple pitches, umpire in chief, Beans Reardon called a halt to the game.  After a 40 minute wait, the remainder of the game was called off.
