Hank Sauer helps the Reds knock out Spahn
May 26, 1948 ... The
Cincinnati Reds battered both Warren Spahn and Clyde Shoun out of
action, to pin and 8 to 5 setback on the Braves. The Tribe had a 4 to
3 lead entering the fifth inning, but the Reds then ripped Spahn to
pieces. The Reds scored twice in the second inning when Hank Sauer
opened with a double and took third as Alvin Dark threw out Ted Kluszewski.
Sauer then scored on a passed ball. Virgil Stallcip knocked out a double and an
error by Bob Elliott put them two runs up.
Spahn helped himself back in the game by starting off the third inning with a
single. He took third on Tommy Holmes double, and a single by Eddie Stanky
brought him home. Holmes scored next when Jim Russell forced Stanky at second.
That tied the game at 2 to 2.
A screeching line drive into the visitors bullpen by Bill Salkeld gave the
Braves a 3 to 2 lead in the fourth. It was his second homer of the year. They
added another run as Alvin Dark beat out a bunt and then took second on a wild
pitch. He scored when Spahn reached on an error.
The Reds picked up one run in the fifth on a walk to Grady Hatton, and hits
by Sauer and Danny Litwhiler. In the sixth they went ahead with three runs. Once
again Sauer led them with a terrific blast over the centerfield fence for a
homer. Shoun was now in the game and he walked Ken Raffensberger, followed by a
double by Kluszewski. Red Barrett came in to relieve and Stallcup dropped in a
Texas Leaguer in center, to score two more, putting the Reds up 8 to 4.
In the ninth-inning Frank McCormick had a pinch-hit single and after Tommy
Holmes looked at the third strike, Eddie Stanky walked. Sibbi Sisti came in to
run for McCormick and scored the last run of the game when Jim Russell singled
to left. |
