The Braves and
Dodgers
slug it out at the Wigwam

May 28, 1948 ... The
Brooklyn Dodgers broke the Braves winning streak over them with a 7
to 5 win, in as intense a struggle as the Braves Field spectators
have seen the season. Beaten eight times in a row by the Tribe, the
Dodgers ripped Johnny Sain to shreds. They then picked up their two
winning runs off Bobby Hogue. Before Sain left in the third inning,
the Dodgers had scored five runs on six hits with two walks. Down 7
to 2 in the seventh inning, the Braves started to mount a comeback. Pinch-hitter
Bobby Sturgeon bounced a single off Pee Wee Reese's chest and Tommy Holmes
singled him to second. Eddie Stanky lined out and Jim Russell came up with a
double off the fence in left-center for two runs. Harry Taylor came into pitch
for the Dodgers and put a halt on the rally. He then escaped in the
eighth-inning, with two men aboard in two outs when Tommy Holmes hit a vicious
line drive right it Arky Vaughn.
Ahead 7 to 4, Taylor walked Stanky, the leadoff the ninth and then Russell.
He was sent to the showers and that brought in Willard Ramsdell. On a three and
one count Bob Elliott rolled one down the Jackie Robinson who threw over to
Reese, forcing Russell. Jeff Heath came up next and a slow curve broke in on
him, hitting his bat. The ball bounced back to Ramsdell who threw it to Reese
forcing Elliott. Reese then threw the ball into the dirt trying to double up
Heath and allowed Stanky to score. The tying run was at the plate in the person
of Earl Torgeson and he was walked, bringing up Phil Masi with the potential
winning run. But all Phil could do was roll one down to Reese, who flipped over
to Robinson and end the game.
The loss cost the Braves a grip on third place and were dumped into a tie for
fourth with the Pirates, as the Phillies leaped into third by beating the
Giants. |
