Preacher Roe holds down the Tribe
May 29, 1948 ... Tonight,
the Braves had a 3 to 1 defeat pinned on them by Preacher Roe of the
Dodgers. The setback was the third in his many nights this week. To
make matters worse another ace failed to hit the brakes for the
skidding Southworth team. First Warren Spahn was beat by the Reds and
then Johnny Sain failed to stop the Dodgers. Tonight Bill Voiselle
joined his mates on the wailing wall of the Boston clubhouse.
The setback dropped the Braves to an even .500 in the standings. They came
home with an 8-3 road record and it was expected that they would fly high at
their home park. But in the ten games played here they managed to win only four.
Roe kept the Braves' nine hits scattered and more importantly he didn't issue
a pass. It was his second game, in succession, without walking a man. He now has
won three games and lost only one, to become the temporary leader of Brooklyn's
pitching staff.
Voiselle didn't have his control, walking five, one of which resulted in the
Dodgers first run. He and Roe were even until the sixth inning when Gene
Hermanski blasted a terrific home run that broke open the game.
The first Dodger run was developed in a strange combination of two walks and
an error. To make it worse, Voiselle walked his mound opponent on four straight
balls. He then fumbled Pee Wee Reese's sacrifice. A pass to Jorgenson filled the
bases, and as Jackie Robinson rolled into a doubleplay, Roe scored.
Boston's equalizer came out of three hits and an error. With one out,
Voiselle got himself a single on a bad hop to the right of Eddie Miksis. This
put a little fire into the Braves, as Tommy Holmes singled to right to send
Voiselle to second. Then Pee Wee Reese booted Eddie Stanky's roller to load the
bases. Jim Russell came up next and dropped a single to center, to score
Voiselle with the tying run. Holmes tried to score also, but he was rubbed out
at the plate.
Hermanski dissolved a tie in the sixth inning with one swing. He drove a 3-1
pitch half way up into the last section of the right-field pavilion for his
first homer of the year. Rowe's double and Ward single gave the Dodgers another
run to make it 3 to 1. |
