The Braves
ninth inning rally falls
short

Higbe got himself chased out of the ballgame early in yesterday's
game, so he can come back and pitched against the Braves this
afternoon. In this game he triumphed over Boston 5 to 3, before a
screening ladies day gathering of 17,226 fans at Forbes Field.
Higbe pitched himself out of a couple of early game jams and weakened in the
stretch. The Braves were able to pick up their first run in the eighth-inning
and then Higbe ran out of gas in the ninth. But Elmer Singleton arrived on the
scene with nobody out, and the bases loaded, and he retired the next three
batters with ease, to save Higbe his fourth win of the year.
It wasn't a good day for big Bill Voiselle, who pitched for the Braves and
was wild, walking six men and giving up nine hits during his 6 1/3 innings on
the mound. He was chased in the seventh and it marked the fourth time in a row
that he has failed to finish a game.
The Pirates built up a five-run lead as they scored three runs in the fifth
on a single, a Frank Gustine home run, two passes and a double by Dixie Walker.
A single by Ed Stevens and another single by Higbe, gave them one more in the
sixth. An infield hit by Johnny Hopp, two more walks and a long fly ball by
Danny Murtaugh were converted into the fifth and final Pirates run.
The Braves launched a come back in the eighth-inning, when with one down,
Tommy Holmes doubled down the left-field line and scored as Jim Russell singled
to center. In the ninth the Braves were again on the attack as Jeff Heath opened
with a vicious three base blast into left-center field. He walked home as Earl
Torgeson doubled to centerfield, making it 5 to 2. Bill Salkeld and Alvin Dark
then looked over four balls and walked to load the bases. It was then that
manager Billy Meyer brought in Singleton to pitch. Billy Southworth countered
with Frank McCormick. McCormick represented the winning run, but went down
swinging. Up next came Tommy Holmes and he rolled one down to Stevens for the
second out, but it also allowed Torgeson to score. The game ended when Stanky
dribbled a soft one down to Murtaugh and the Pirates win was complete.
Holmes' double in the eighth-inning, extended his present game batting streak
to 15 games. He has now hit safely in 27 out of the 28 games played. |
