The Braves
crush the Cardinals, 10 to 2
June 10, 1948 ... Only
one half game separated the Boston Braves from first place, when they
recorded their fifth straight road victory, 10 to 2, over the St.
Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park. Johnny Sain put down the
Cardinals on seven hits and the Braves moved into second place where
they trail the Giants by one half game. Bob Elliott ended a long
slump by crashing out four hits and drawing a walk. His fourth home run of the
year chased out one St. Louis pitcher and his third inning double sent another
one to the showers.
Sain chalked up his sixth consecutive road victory of the season. Only one of
the two Cardinals runs was earned. That was Stan Musial's 13th Homer of the year
in the fifth inning.
The Braves jumped out to a quick lead as Eddie Stanky opened up the game with
a double and scored on Earl Torgeson single. Elliott then unloaded on a three
and two pitch by starter Murry Dickson. It soaring far up until the left-field
bleachers just underneath the huge scoreboard.
Bill Salkeld stroked his third homer of the year to open the second inning
against the second Cardinals pitcher Ted Wilks. Then in the third inning the
Braves battered Ken Burkhart for three more runs. Tommy Holmes beat out a tap
over Burkhart's head and Torgeson cracked out a triple to centerfield to score
him. Torgy came home on Elliott's two bagger and Bob scored on a single by
Salkeld, making the score 7 to 1.
It was no contest thereafter. Sain was hit safely four times in the first two
innings, but over the last seven he was invincible. He gave up three more hits
over the final seven innings, two of them being infield taps. The third was
Musial's fifth inning homer. He fanned eight men, his top for the season. He
walked two batters and retired 12 men in order from the fifth to the
ninth-inning.
The Braves stretched their winning streak to a new high for the year. They
have won seven and lost two on the road trip. Sain has won three of the seven
games that they Braves have won on the road. |
