The Braves take two and climb back to the top
June 13, 1948 ... The
Braves rebounded into a first place tie with the New York Giants.
After losing a doubleheader to the Cincinnati Reds today, the
Tribe swept one today by scores 0f 8 to 7 and 10-5, while the Giants
divided their doubleheader with the Cardinals.
The Braves made a sensational comeback in the first game.
Trailing 6-0 after six innings, they scored four runs in the seventh
and four in the ninth, with the winning run being driven in by Eddie
Stanky.
It took a superb effort by Johnny Sain to grab the opener. Warren
Spahn got the ball in the opening contest and was hit for six runs.
The Braves loaded the bases in the seventh and Frank McCormick
knocked out a double to score two runs. Phil Masi knocked in
two more to cut the lead to 6 to 4.
Bob Elliott started the ninth with a base hit. Mike McCormick
tried to sacrifice him over but beat out the bunt, and Jim Russell
loaded the bases with a scratch single. Phil Masi's grounder to
Virgil Stallcup, looked like a sure doubleplay, but Bobby Adams threw
the ball past Ted Kluszewski and two runs scored. Masi moved to
second on the play and brought in by Bobby Sturgeon's single to tie
it up. Sturgeon was bunted over to second and scored the game
winner on Stanky's single to right.
A three run homer by Bob Elliott and a three run double by Clyde
Shoun highlighted the second game, in which Cincinnati ace, Ewell
Blackwell was driven to the showers. Shoun worked the last 3
2/3 innings after Jim Prendergast and Vern Bickford were knocked out.
Shoun also delivered the wallop that wrecked Blackwell.
The Braves went out in front by a 6-4 score when Blackwell walked
Sibby Sisti intentionally to load the bases and face Shoun.
Unfortunately for Blackwell, Clyde slugged a two base shot into right
center, which just missed being a grandslam homer. It was his
first hit of the year and drove in three runs. Howie Fox then
gave up a triple to Stanky to bring in Shoun with the tenth run. |
