Johnny Sain throttles the Cubs on six hits
June 15, 1948 ... Johnny
Sain (7-4) won for the first time at home this year by defeating the
Cubs, 6-3 at Braves Field. He had a couple of worrisome moments
but pulled out his seventh win and helped the Braves move in to a one
game lead over the Giants.
Russ Meyer was the Cubs pitcher and was very wild, passing nine
batters in less than four innings. Sain only had some trouble
in two innings, when Chicago touched for their six hits. Johnny had a
great curve working for him and got out of trouble easily both times.
Eddie Stanky opened up the first inning by reaching second on an
error by Hal Jeffcoat in center field. He was knocked in by
Tommy Holmes who reached second on the throw home. Meyers then walked
three batters and forced in Holmes, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Sibby Sisti beat out a hit to deep short with
the bases loaded. Jeff Heath's base hit after two more passes,
loaded them up for Sibby and it gave the Braves a 3 to 1 advantage.
Manager Charlie Grimm left Meyers in the game, only to see him walk
four more men in the fourth inning.
The Cubs scored another run in the sixth inning, but the Braves
countered with two in the seventh. Bill Salkeld walked and came
home on a wild throw to first by Andy Pafko on Sibby's grounder.
Johnny Sain singled Sisti in to make it 6 to 2. The Cubs scored
one more in the ninth on a wild throw by Tommy Holmes, but Sain got
out of the trouble to preserve his first home win.
Eddie Stanky (.317 BA) knocked out three hits, but was replaced by
Connie Ryan after an ankle injury in the eighth inning. |
