The Braves come back, but can't hold the lead
June 16, 1948 ... A
poor performance by Bill Voiselle pushed the Braves back into a tie
at the top of the National League. Seven straight times the
Cubs had lost to the Braves, but today they won 8 to 5, before a
Ladies Day crowd at Braves Field.
It was Bill Voiselle's seventh incomplete game, as he retired only
one Cub batter before he was taken out of the game. He allowed
three runs but had great control. The Cubs just had his number.
Eddie Waitkus sent one into the Cubs bullpen with one aboard, and a
smashed single and double accounted for three first inning runs.
After Red Barrett came in and allowed another run in the second
inning, the Braves mounted a comeback. A walk and singles by Mike
McCormick and Sibby Sisti, accounted for one run, and Barrett drove
home a pair himself, to make it 4-3. In the fourth, the Tribe scored
two times on three consecutive singles by Jim Russell, Phil Masi and
Sibby Sisti. After Tommy Holmes was walked, driving in a run,
Sisti scored on a wild pitch to grab a 5 to 4 lead.
But the joy was short lived. The Cubs countered with three runs in
the fifth and tagged on one in the ninth. Emil Kush, who
replaced Cubs starter Bob McCall, pitched hitless ball over the last
four innings, to get the win. |
