Torgy's hit wins it for Clyde Shoun
June 18, 1948 ... Clyde
Shoun pinned a 5 to 4 defeat on the Cincinnati Reds tonight at Braves
Field. It was his first start of the season after graduating from the
bullpen last week. Faulty fielding put him in a jam in the third
inning as the Reds scored twice, but it only meant that the Braves
had to make another one of their dramatic comebacks. Cincinnati had
scored two runs in the third inning that gave them a 2 to 0 lead. A walk to Jim
Elliott, a double by Jeff Heath and Jim Russell's fly to centerfield, gave the
Braves one run back in the fourth inning.
They picked up three runs off starter Ewell Blackwell in the sixth. Blackwell
had fanned eight in the first five innings with a nice wide sweeping curveball.
But now the Braves and timed him and Tommy Holmes started the uprising with a
single. He was sacrificed to second by Torgeson and after Elliott rolled out,
Heath drew a walk. Holmes scored the tying run on Russell's single to left, and
when Hank Sauer made a poor throw, it allowed Russell to go to second. With
first base open, Bill Salkeld was purposely passed. Manager Billy Southworth
then inserted Mike McCormick to hit for Sibbi Sisti and he lined a clean single
to center, to drive home both Heath and Russell, giving the Braves a 4 to 2
lead.
The Reds tied it up in the seventh on a walk, a single by Johnny Wyrostek and
Grady Hatton's triple off the centerfield fence. Earl Torgeson knocked in the
winning run in the seventh inning. Eddie Stanky was the first batter to face Ken
Peterson, who had come in to relieve Blackwell. After Peterson passed Stanky, he
uncorked a wild pitch that moved him over to second. Tommy Holmes grounded out
to short as Stanky took third. Then he scored as Torgeson slammed a single into
right field that put the Braves up 5 to 4 with the final run.
All of the games played against the Reds have been close ones, with five
being decided by a single run. Of these games the Braves have won four. By
winning 12 of their last 15 games, the Braves are in first place by one half
game over the Pirates. |
