The Cardinals halt the Braves
June 21, 1948 ... The
dreaded base on balls led to the end of the Braves latest six-game
winning streak at Braves Field tonight. It cost Warren Spahn a
heartbreaking 1 to 0 loss as Al Brazle orchestrated a very clean
seven hit shutout for the St. Louis Cardinals in one of the finest
battles of the year. Two singles followed the fateful walk in the
seventh inning. The second of them was a line drive off the bat of Del Rice that
drove in a run. Spahn had retired in the Slaughter to open the seventh before
walking Terry Moore. Nippy Jones blasted a line drive to left-center that sent
Moore over to third. Rice's game winning hit was a line drive that Alvin Dark
misjudged and leapt for the ball too early. It struck the side of his glove and
bounded into left field for a single and the ballgame.
The Braves outhit the Cardinals 7 to 6, but they couldn't come through in the
clutch. Only once during the game did the Braves have more than one man on base.
Brazle never allowed more in one hit in an inning and became the first starting
pitcher to finish the game against the Braves in almost a month.
Although the setback was a tough one, the Braves remain out front by one half
games over the Pittsburgh Pirates, who were beaten by the Dodgers. The loss was
only the fourth one in the last 19 games for the Braves. It marked the first
time in that stretch that a Braves pitcher other than Red Barrett, has lost a
ballgame. |
