The Cardinals
sweep the Braves
June 23, 1948 ... Game
postponed due to rain
June 24, 1948 ... The
St. Louis Cardinals took their third straight game, to sweep the
series from the Boston Braves at Braves Field. The first two games of
the series were very close, but in this game, the Cardinals made it
an 11 to 2 rout, as they climbed into second place over Pittsburgh,
only one half game behind the Braves.
In the first half of the opening inning the Cardinals scored four runs before
starting pitcher Johnny Sain was able to get a man out, and after that, it was a
hopeless uphill climb for the Braves. Cardinal southpaw, Howie Pollett was
immense in the clutch. While Pollett was scattering ten Braves hits, only three
of which came in the fourth inning, Enos Slaughter and Red Schoendinst fired the
Cardinals big guns. Slaughter walloped a triple over Mike McCormick's head in
left field with the bases loaded in that first inning, while Schoendinst, for
the third time this season, knocked out four hits, including a home run and a
double, batting in four runs.
It was the worst Braves showing since the previous homestand, when they lost
to Pittsburgh 13 to 0. Johnny Sain survived the first frame, but was routed in
the sixth inning after he threw Pollett's bunt into right field. The Braves team
chipped in with five errors.
The Cardinals two big innings when the first and the sixth. Oddly enough,
four hits, including Slaughter's triple and a base on balls accounted for the
big first inning run, while the Cardinals got three in the sixth with only one
hit.
Rain held up the game for an hour and a half before the scheduled time. The
Braves had just begun batting practice when the rain started and then the ground
crew brought the tarpaulin out onto the field. Vern Bickford notified manager
Billy Southworth that he had a sore elbow and x-rays will be taken tomorrow. |
