Clint Conaster helps Sain win his ninth
June 27, 1948 ... The
Braves protected their first place lead with a 9 to 1 victory over
the Pittsburgh Pirates before 17,648 happy fans at Braves Field.
Clint Conaster, who escaped minor league serfdom, when he was drafted
from Buffalo last winter, knocked in three runs to help Johnny Sain
notched his ninth victory of the season. Sain kept eight hits, by the
Pirates, while scattered. Conaster knocked home the winning run in
the second inning as Bob Elliott started it off with a single, Jim Russell was
passed, and after a sacrifice bunt, Conaster drilled a two run single that gave
the Braves a 2 to 0 lead. Two walks and a single by Russell gave the Braves
another run in the third and that chased Pirates starter, Vic Lombardi.
The Pirates brought in Kirby Higbe who watched his outfielders drop fly balls
for extra base hits. This happened in the fifth inning when the Braves scored
four runs. Tommy Holmes opened the inning with a single and after two
strikeouts, Higbe walked Russell. Phil Masi lofted a fly ball to right-center
that fell for a double and scored two runs. He came home courtesy of Conaster,
who knocked out another base hit. Then Alvin Dark hit a fly ball to right-center
that dropped for a triple.
In the sixth inning Sain lost a shutout, but the Braves got one in the bottom
of the six and one in the bottom of the seventh, to make the score 9 to 1. Sain
walked five batters and only struck out one.
The Braves have the day off tomorrow and in taken nine of the 14 games
