... June 28, 1948 ... No game scheduled June 29, 1948 ... The thunderous power of the New York Giants exploded at the expense of Warren Spahn and reliever Bobby Hogue over at Braves Field. The Tribe absorbed an 11 to 3 blasting, it being the sixth time that the Braves had lost to the Giants. Five home runs boomed off the bats of four Giants sluggers. Sid Gordon knocked out two, boosting his season's total to 15. His second drive came in the eighth-inning and was his third grand slam homer of the year. On six occasions this year, Gordon was at the plate with the bases loaded and three times he has cleaned it up. Tonight he drove in five runs. Whitey Lockman, Bill Rigney and Walker Cooper were the other home run hitters in the Giants lineup. The National League record is seven home runs in one game and the season record for grand slams is four by one player. It was the first time this year that the Giants have hit five homers. The Giants had been in a hitting slump, but they left no doubt in the minds of the spectators at Braves Field, or in the Braves themselves, that they were out of it, as they sprayed 17 hits all over the ballpark. The Braves broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning, when Earl Torgeson got a base hit, and with one out Jim Russell moved to them over to third with a base hit to right-field. Then Jeff Heath grounded out to Rigney to score Torgeson and give the Braves a quick 1 to 0 lead. The Giants had a three run come back at Warren Spahn's expense in the sixth inning. Sid Gordon hit the first pitch against the scoreboard for his 14th home run to tie it up. Whitey Lockman then hit the first pitch he saw into the visitors bullpen for his ninth home run and a 3 to 1 Giants lead. In the sixth inning, Walker Cooper made it 4 to 1 in favor of the Giants with the third home run of the game against Spahn. His fifth home run of the season was also into the Giants bullpen. Bill Rigney opened up the seventh inning with the fourth home run of the game for the Giants, as the ball cleared the left-field wall to left of the scoreboard. It was his sixth home run of the year. The bombardment continued against Bobby Hogue in the eighth-inning as Johnny Mize, Walker Cooper and Willard Marshall all got on base, and then Gordon followed it up with another home run over the left-field wall that sent the Giants away to a 9 to 2 lead. The Braves scored runs in the sixth and ninth-innings. In the sixth Tommy Holmes hit a double to centerfield and Bob Elliott singled him over to third. Holmes scored on a sac fly ball to center off the bat of Russell. In the ninth after Russell singled and Heath doubled to left, Bill Salkeld drove in the third Braves run. In the first seven games of the Braves and Giants series, Boston has only batted .232 as compared to.262 for New York. The Tribe's average for the season however is .272 as compared to the Giants' .237. |
