humbles the Giants

Voiselle gave the Braves a 3 to 1 decision over the New York Giants
before 22,117 witnesses at Braves Field. It was his eighth win of the
year and it moved the Braves a game and a half ahead in the tightly
packed National League standings. It gave the Braves their first
victory of the year here against New York and it ended a stretch of
nine consecutive starts during which Voiselle had failed to finish a
game. Larry Jansen, the Giants starter, had beaten the Braves seven
times in succession until tonight. Voiselle was deprived of the
shutout in the sixth inning when Johnny Mize lofted a drive which just floated
over the fence in front of the visiting bullpen for his 16th homer of the
season. The Braves scored all their runs and eight of their ten hits off Jansen,
with Tommy Holmes poking him for three straight singles and boosting his batting
average to .354.
It took four hits to give the Braves their first pair of runs. In the third
inning Eddie Stanky and Holmes opened with consecutive singles and moved to
second and third as Earl Torgeson grounded out. Bob Elliott slapped a ball
between short and third that Buddy Kerr did well to stop and it went for a
single as Stanky scored. Jim Russell then blasted a line single to center that
brought Holmes across and the Braves jumped out in front 2 to 0.
In the next inning the Braves made their final run against Jansen. Alvin Dark
opened with an infield single and stole second as Voiselle struck out. Holmes
then brought him home with a slashing single into right field, making it 3 to 0.
Voiselle was terrific in the clutch. With Walker Cooper on second and one out
in the sixth inning, following the home run by Mize, Voiselle rubbed out
Marshall and Gordon on grounders to Dark. The pressure was terrific in the
eighth-inning also but Voiselle didn't wilt. Wilmer Mizell singled and Marshall
walked. There were two outs when the dangerous Sid Gordon came to the plate.
Voiselle got down to a three and two count and then fired a sharp curve at
Gordon which he fouled back and catcher Bill Salkeld caught for the final out.
Voiselle now boasts three straight wins over the Giants since he was swapped to
the Braves for Mort Cooper.
Johnny Antonelli, the 18-year-old phenom, who the Braves signed the other day
warmed up for 10 minutes. He broke off a few great curveballs that manager Billy
Southworth raved about. |
