The Phillies
drop the Braves twice
July 4, 1948 ... The
Braves dropped both ends of their July 4th doubleheader to the
Phillies at Shibe Park. The Phils beat Bill Voiselle, 7 to 2, in the
opener as Phillies starter Blix Donnelly allowed only four hits to
Boston. Later Philly beat Red Barrett by a 5 to 2 score and the
double win put them in fourth place. The Braves were out batted 13 to
12 in the opener, while the Phillies struck only 8 blows to Boston's
10 in the second game. The first game was not much of a contest.
The Tribe was practically helpless against Donnelly while the Phillies hung up
three runs in two innings against Voiselle and his reliever Nelson Potter. The
home team scored their final run against rookie Johnny Antonelli, who made his
first major-league appearance.
For five innings the only Boston hit that the Braves were able to get against
Donnelly, was Earl Torgeson's right-field homer in the fourth inning. Later,
when behind 6 to 1, .the Braves scored again on Bill Salkeld's double, and a hit
by Eddie Stanky. Donnelly had allowed only three hits in the last 20 innings he
had pitched.
In the second game Philly put in Robin Roberts to face the Braves Red
Barrett. In the third inning, which the Braves scored two runs on Al Dark's home
run and Tommy Holmes double, the Philly rookie struck out Barrett, Torgeson and
Jim Russell. Red Barrett survived only until the third inning. In the fourth
with the Braves up 2 to 1, Philly got four runs and that was enough to win the
game.
Al Dark continued his batting streak. In six times at bat the rookie
infielder had a hit each game. He is now hit safely in 15 straight games with 24
hits in 56 times at bat for a .417 batting average. Jeff Heath returned to the
starting lineup and knocked out a pair of clean doubles to left and right and
then a solid single. |
