Conaster and Masi deliver the goods for the Tribe
July 27, 1948 ... The
Braves defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates at Braves Field, behind Nelson
Potter's six hit pitching, by a score of 5 to 1. Ralph Kiner, of the
Pirates, hit his 28th home run in the first inning, but the Braves
offset it with a two run round tripper by Phil Masi, and Clint
Conaster's first big-league homer. The Braves boosted their lead to 5
1/2 games as Brooklyn knocked the St. Louis out of second place,
taking over the spot themselves. Potter himself, knocked in the
Tribe's second run, which eventually won the game, in the second inning. He
didn't walk a man and other than Kiner, very few Pirates reached second base.
Pirates starter, Fritz Ostermueller, was given a 1 to 0 lead when he took the
mound to face the the Braves in their half of the first inning. Kiner had
slapped a two and two serve over the wall in left by the giant scoreboard. After
the home run, the Braves went to work. Conaster singled in the second and came
all the way around on Masi's double. Then Connie Ryan was intentionally passed
to get at Potter. Nels lined a base hit allowing Masi to scamper home.
The only other moment when Potter felt any threat was when Wally Westlake hit
one that made Conaster back to the centerfield fence, as he hauled in the long
drive, in the seventh inning. He threw 103 pitches while Ostermueller delivered
111. Masi and Conaster accounted for five of the nine hits by the Braves and
scored all the runs. |
