The Braves
lose their fourth straight
August 4, 1948 ... The
Braves lost their third straight game to the Cincinnati Reds, 4 to 2.
It was the Tribe's fourth straight loss. The St. Louis Cardinals
moved to within four games. Danny Litwhiler was again the culprit
who injured the Braves chances. He was struck out twice by starter Bill
Voiselle, and then came to bat in the eighth, with Johnny Wyrostek on base, and
stroked a long home run over the left-field fence.
The Braves threatened again mildly in the eighth, when with one out, Bobby
Sturgeon singled to left field and Al Lyons came to bat for Voiselle and popped
out to Kluszewski. Mike McCormick drew a walk and the hope for a run died when
Alvin Dark flew out to centerfield.
The Reds scored their other runs in the fifth in the sixth. Kluszewski lined
a drive over the screen in right for the first run of the game and Wyrostek's
double to center brought in another run the next inning.
Reds southpaw, Ken Raffensberger, had throttled the Braves for eight innings
except for a home run by Bob Elliott, but when the first three men singled to
open the ninth, he was removed in favor of Harry Gumbert. Raffensberger hadn't
allowed a hit until the fifth inning when Elliott ripped a 3-2 pitch high over
the right-field screen.
In the ninth, Clint Conaster tried to lay down a bunt but pushed it too hard
to firstbaseman Ted Kluszewski, who threw out Elliott at third-base. Phil Masi
then next promptly hit into a doubleplay that ended the game. |
