SPAHN & SAIN and PRAY FOR RAIN ...
August 19, 1948 ... Manager
Billy Southworth welcomed today's postponement, with the Giants, as a
blessing in disguise. When news of the cancellation was given to him,
he broke out in a slight smile. He said "I was going to start Johnny
Sain against the Giants today, and I had Warren Spahn ready for the
opener with Brooklyn. Now I can use Sain and Spahn and then Voiselle,
leaving only Sunday's game to worry about. " Southworth met with
President Lou Perini talk about the possible changes that might lift the team
together. Tommy Holmes is in a slump and neither felt that Marv Rickert nor Jim
Gleason in Milwaukee, can really help the club, as both are outfielders.
Southworth received news that Jim Russell's condition is improving in a
Pennsylvania Hospital. However he doesn't expect the centerfielder to be ready
for a minimum of another two weeks. Nelson Potter's status also remains
questionable, with the pitcher taking heat treatments twice a day. |
