Red Barrett pitches a five hit winner at the Teepee
September 5, 1948 ... Red
Barrett with his repertoire of softball pitches doing the talking,
steered the Braves to a 5 to 1 victory over the Phillies at Braves
field. Barrett, leading 2 to 1 in the fifth inning, rode on to a
safer margin with the help of Frank McCormick's three-run double to
right. He chalked up his third straight win and issued no walks for
his second consecutive time. He spaced out five hits and was robbed
of a shutout when Johnny Blatnick took a changeup pitch high over the
left-field wall in the fourth inning. Red turned back 16 men in
order, after the homer, before Del Ennis shot a single to left.
Meanwhile, the Braves were not exactly murdering southpaw Ken Heintzelman. The
Braves pecked away for a couple of runs in the third inning, which as events
turned out, proved sufficient for the win. Sibbi Sisti, who played a great game
around second base, opened the inning by drawing a walk. Barrett attempted to
sacrifice and the ball was about to drop harmlessly to the turf about 10 feet
from the plate in foul territory, when first baseman Bert Haas charged in and
gloved the ball inches off the grass for an amazing catch.
Tommy Holmes then took advantage of a two ball no strike count to single over
second base and Sisti reached third, scoring on Al Dark's single to left. Holmes
stopped at second, and after Mike McCormick struck out, Bob Elliott took one of
Heintzelman's pitches for a clean single to center that scored Holmes with what
proved to be the winning run.
Up 2 to 1 in the fifth inning, the Tribe put the game away when Holmes
started with a single to center, again with two balls and no strikes. Dark
punched his second single to left with Holmes stopping at second. Mike McCormick
sacrificed the runners along and Bob Elliott walked to fill the bases. After
Jeff Heath popped out, Frank McCormick drilled a sinking liner to right which
went for two bases, getting by Del Ennis. Holmes, Dark and Elliott all scored to
make it 5 to 1.
But it was Barrett's pinpoint control that subdued the Phillies. The redhead
as gone his last 28 2/3 innings without walking and opposing hitter.
The Tribe thus retained their two gain margin over the Dodgers, who defeated
the Giants, 4-3 in the 12th inning at Ebbets Field. George Shuba's pinch-hit
double off the screen in left, with the bases loaded and two outs, was the game
winning blast.
The Cards' Howie Pollett's effective eight hit pitching and a spurt of
wildness by Cincinnati's Ken Peterson, gave St. Louis of 5 to 1 victory at
Crosley Field. Pollett notched his 10th victory and was in complete command
except for one inning when the Reds scored one run. The Cardinals still remain 2
1/2 games behind the Braves with their win. |
