Spahn and Sain beat the Phillies
September 11, 1948 ... Behind
the one-two punch of Johnny Sain and Warren Spahn, the Braves downed
the Phillies twice, 3 to 1 in the afternoon and 3 to 2 at night.
Playing before 4719 people at Shibe Park in the afternoon, Johnny Sain racked
up his 19th win. Bob Elliott smacked his 20th homer and accounted for all three
of the Braves runs. Eddie Miller hit his 14th home run for the Phillies and
robbed Sain of a shutout. Sain scattered seven hits, walked only one and struck
out five, pitching his 24th complete game of the year. He was only in trouble in
the ninth-inning when Del Ennis doubled and Johnny Blatnick reached first on an
infield single with nobody out. But Sain took out the next three batters in
order to preserve his win.
Sain's opponent, Schoolboy Rowe was tough with his only bad inning being the
third. With two outs he was ahead of Alvin Dark, two strikes and one ball. But
Dark dumped a Texas League single into short center. Earl Torgeson drew a walk
and up came Bob Elliott, to belt the first pitch into the stands and put the
Braves up 3 to 0.
The Boston batters pounded the Phillies for 13 runs in the night game. Warren
Spahn had their number all the way, knocking in his many runs as he allowed,
when he doubled and homered. It was the first home run of his four year major
league career. He allowed four hits and struck out five. The Tribe connected for
16 hits, including Jeff Heath's 18th home run of the year, Spahn's first and
Earl Torgeson's two doubles.
Tommy Holmes singled in two runs in the second inning to put the Braves up 2
to 0. Walks to Heath and Mike McCormick, along with an infield single by Phil
Masi had loaded the bases. Elliott's double and Mike McCormick's single added
one more in the fifth. The Phillies broke the ice in their half of the fifth,
scoring on a triple by Bama Rowell and a ground ball out by Andy Seminick.
The Braves sealed in the sixth inning and sent Phillies starter, Robin
Roberts, to the showers. They batted around after two were out, compiling seven
runs. Holmes got a base hit and Dark's double to right sent Holmes over to
third. Torgeson slammed a line drive to center that scored both Holmes and Dark,
with Torgy ended up on second base. Elliott was walked and then Jeff Heath lined
one into the gap in left-center to score Torgeson and send Elliott over to
second base. Charlie Bucknell came in to relieve Roberts and walked Mike
McCormick to load the bases. Masi next connected with a fastball to center, that
brought in everybody, with Phil ending his journey on second base. He scored on
a single by Sibbi Sisti, putting the Braves up 10 to 1.
The Phillies got one run back in their half of the inning and in the eighth,
Spahn followed a double by Sisti with a smash that went over the 331 foot mark
and 50 ft high right-field wall. Heath got into the act in the ninth-inning
sending a terrific drive over the right-center field wall, making the Braves
total of 13 runs.
They Braves, thus took a 3 1/2 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the
National League race. The Pirates edged the Chicago Cubs, 13 to 12 this
afternoon, on Ralph Kiner's pinch-hit grand slam. |
