“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BILLY SOUTHWORTH
& CLYDE SHOUN

BOSTON BRAVES ...
SPAHN & SAIN and PRAY FOR RAIN ...

September 13, 1948 ... No game scheduled ... The Braves margin over the Pirates increased to 3 1/2 games, when the Bucs were beaten by the Giants, 5 to 2. The Giants jumped on Vic Lombardi for three runs in the first inning and kept the lead throughout the game.

The Braves regulars took the day off but Billy Southworth and coach Johnny Cooney put the others through a stiff two hour workout.  Glenn Elliott, Johnny Antonelli, Ernie White, Al Lyons, Clyde Shoun and Johnny Beazley pitched batting practice to Clint Conaster, Bobby Sturgeon, Ray Sanders and Eddie Stanky.  Stanky still favors his foot and could be used in a pinch hitting role if necessary.
