Bobby Sturgeon was traded to the Boston Braves from the Cubs in late February 1948. As a dependable glove man, Bobby was deemed best suited to a backup infielder role — a veteran who could both fill in at second base and back up rookie shortstop Alvin Dark. He was also felt to be a positive clubhouse influence by manager Billy Southworth.
