October 18, 1963 ...The Patriots sputtering offense went on a roll by smashing the Broncos 40-21. Gino Cappelletti took it upon himself to take charge and kicked four field goals, scored a touchdown on a brilliant catch and kicked four conversions to lead the offensive display. Cappy had a prominent partner in Babe Parilli, who had his best night ever, as a Boston Patriot. Parilli, who had been out of whack all season, ran the show. He completed 21 of 31 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns. But it was the play calling and leadership that stood out. In both departments he was close to perfect. And once more it was the defense that made sure the game was in the vault. Broncos’ quarterback Mickey Slaughter was hit so hard in the second quarter by Houston Antwine, Bob Dee and Jack Rudolph, that he had to be taken to the hospital. The Broncos only scored once after that. The Pats started it off with Parilli connecting with Cappelletti and Larry Garron to set up the first field goal. Slaughter led the Broncos right back and tossed to Bobby Gaiters on the 29 who took it all the way for a touchdown.
The Patriots regrouped and went 50 yards on six plays which resulted in Cappy making a brilliant scoring catch to give the Patriots the lead, 10-7. Broncos running back, Billy Joe spun off tackle in the next series and went 68 yards into the end zone on the next series. But the Babe came to the rescue, hitting Jimmy Colclough on the four with Billy Crump taking it in on the fourth try putting the Pats out front 17-14. On the next sequence Slaughter went out and Don Breaux couldn’t get it going with the Broncos offense. Cappy cashed in with three more field goals. Breaux managed a touchdown to put Denver within five in the third quarter. But Parilli from the 31, hit Tony Romeo on the 20 who bounced off tacklers for another score and a 33-21 lead. The last score was set up by Bob Suci’s interception on the Pats 30 in the last quarter, who took it down to the Denver seven. Harry Crump took it in for the score to end the game at 21-40. Gino Cappelletti scored 22 points, more than the Broncos did thye whole game. With 69 points, Capply leads the league in scoring with 69 points. |
